Theo Walcott had door slammed in his face by ‘f****** rude’ Fabio Capello and England star’s wife gave manager ‘death stare’ at restaurant

Theo Walcott is a stickler for punctuality, just look at the way he times his runs.
The Southampton forward even showed up for this interview with talkSPORT bang on time.
You don’t want to get on the wrong side of Fabio Capello
But Walcott is still only human, which means like the rest of us, things occasionally slip his mind.
Back at the start of his young England career, the former Arsenal winger missed one of Fabio Capello’s team meetings.
And the fallout suggests that might be why Walcott never got picked for the 2010 World Cup despite a hat-trick against Croatia in qualifying.
Speaking on the latest episode of Up Front With, which airs this Sunday at 9.30pm, the 31-year-old told talkSPORT: “I missed a meeting once and I’m someone who likes to be on time.
“I went to John Terry and I’m young, I said sorry for missing the meeting and he said it was fine.

“I thought no, I’ll go to Capello, and I was pretty-much on my knees saying sorry. He just shrugged his shoulders and closed the door on me.
“I actually thought, ‘How f****** rude is that?’ I was s******* myself before, I went to John Terry, one of the most respectable guys in the camp, who said it was fine. Then I go to the manager and he does that to me.
“He was very cold. Sometimes it was appropriate, but sometimes it was a bit much.”
After being a surprise selection for the 2006 World Cup aged 17, even more shocking was Walcott’s omission for the following tournament, which Capello eventually admitted was a mistake after Lionel Messi came out and criticised the call.

Injury meant that Walcott missed the 2014 World Cup as well, and by 2018, he was not part of the England set-up anymore.
But Walcott, being the lovely bloke that he is, doesn’t hold a grudge, and actually reflects on how much he grew under Capello for England.
“After saying all that from Capello, I probably learned the most from him,” Walcott added.
“The way he handled all those players was brilliant.”
The same cannot be said for his wife Melanie, however.
Incredibly, Walcott and his wife found themselves in the same restaurant as Capello on the night he resigned as England boss in February 2012.

“The night he lost the England job, I was having a meal with my now wife Melanie and Capello was there,” Walcott added. “We were having Chinese at The Dorchester.
“We said hello afterwards and Mel gave him the death stare. He didn’t take me to the World Cup, after the Croatia hat-trick I didn’t go. That’s why Mel gave him the dirty stare.”
