Nigeria vs Algeria: Belmadi reveals reasons for choosing Super Eagles for friendly match

Algeria coach, Djamel Belmadi, has explained the rationale behind the decision to face Nigeria in a friendly.
According to Belmadi, he wants Algeria to tackle Nigeria because he was looking for a match that could put his team in a difficult situation.
He also explained that Nigeria is a benchmark, adding that he wants his team to take advantage of the FIFA dates.
Algeria will battle Gernot Rohr’s side in an international friendly game at the Wörthersee Stadion, Klagenfurt, in Austria on Friday.

The Desert Foxes defeated Nigeria 2-1 when both sides met at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations semi-final, thanks to Riyad Mahrez’s dramatic 94th-minute winner.
“Nigeria is a benchmark match, especially in the first half, we could have led 3-0. They are always a very close match against them. Moreover, they won more than we did. I am looking for the difficulty against Nigeria to progress,” Belmadi told a news conference on Wednesday.

“I was looking for matches that could put us in difficulty. Some might say we have to pick up slowly, but I don’t see it like that, we have to take advantage of the FIFA dates, there aren’t many.
“We could have chosen smaller teams, but I made the demand to obtain these prestigious matches against Nigeria and Mexico.
“Nigeria everyone knows is the third-best team in the FIFA/CAF ranking.”
