Manchester United legend Mark Hughes calls on Red Devils to hand ‘outstanding’ Edinson Cavani new contract and raises doubts over David de Gea’s future

Mark Hughes has hailed the ‘big influence’ Edinson Cavani has had at Manchester United and says there’s no doubt his former side should hand the experienced striker a new contract.
Cavani, 33, has found the net seven times in 22 appearances for the Red Devils since joining the club on a free transfer last October.
Mark Hughes believes Edinson Cavani is an ‘outstanding player’
The former Paris Saint-Germain striker joined the Premier League giants on a one-year deal, with the option of another year extension.
And Hughes, a two-time Premier League winner who scored 163 goals in 467 games for United, says Cavani has filled a void his former side desperately needed to fill in attack.
“He does make a difference to United in my view,” the former Wales and Blackburn boss told Tuesday’s talkSPORT Breakfast.
“Prior to him coming to the club, [Marcus] Rashford, [Anthony] Martial and [Mason] Greenwood were all tried through the middle but I never felt any of them really knew the role as you need to know the role – being the main target and the focus of attacks.
“Whereas when Cavani plays you sense that the team has a little bit more focus and direction towards the top end of the pitch. The other guys can now play in a position they favour.

“He’s had a big influence, and if it was my decision I’d sign him straight away because I think he’s an outstanding player.”
Meanwhile, Hughes believes United could have a big decision on their hands this summer when it comes to goalkeepers, with question marks over David de Gea’s future.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer defended the Spaniard in public towards the end of last season after several high-profile mistakes, most notably in the FA Cup semi-final defeat to Chelsea.
De Gea, who has been on United’s books for nearly a decade, also made costly errors in the recent 3-3 draw with Everton at Old Trafford.
“The mistakes he makes are more prevalent and more costly,” Hughes explained.

“Obviously if you’re playing for a big club like Manchester United the goalkeeping position is really strong.
“It’s really important and crucial for the team moving forward, so if that concern continues then clearly they will have to look at that position.”
