Kamaru Usman says it would be ‘way worse’ for Jorge Masvidal to fight him if he had a full camp instead of six days

Kamaru Usman defends his UFC welterweight title against Gilbert Burns at UFC 258 this weekend.
The Nigerian Nightmare is 17-1 in his MMA career and 11-0 in the UFC, while this will be his third defence of his welterweight crown having dispatched of Colby Covington and Jorge Masvidal thus far.

However, Burns is a training partner of Usman’s and represents a different type of challenge.
En route to the championship, Usman was the man a lot of the ranked fighters wanted to avoid. But now he sits atop of the division and many are wondering who would be next if he can overcome Burns.
Leon Edwards is in that discussion. The Brit has won eight in a row in UFC with his last loss actually coming to Usman way back in 2015.
He takes on Khamzat Chimaev – finally – on March 13 and if he wins, Usman thinks he deserves the next shot.
“It depends, it depends though,” Usman told BT Sport when asked if Edwards is next. “I have myself to blame for this; beating pretty much everybody in that top ten, now guys can pretty much win just one fight against one ranked opponent and he might get a title shot.
Leon Edwards and Khamzat Chimaev were originally meant to meet on December 19 and then in January before finally settling on March
“Or, Leon has been on a roll knocking off guys here, here and here and of course, if Leon goes out and wins impressively [against Khamzat Chimaev] absolutely I believe he deserves a shot. We’ll see what happens with that.”
Jorge Masvidal is another name that keeps cropping up. Gamebred went the distance with Usman on only six days notice and many feel – including Masvidal himself – the fight would be very different if he had a full training camp.
Usman, however, doesn’t see it that way. In fact, he sees it quite the opposite.
“Right now, I’m literally just focused on Gilbert [Burns] . Because there is no clear-cut guy standing out there that’s like hey, I’m the next guy. I am the next guy. There is no clear-cut guy.
Jorge Masvidal undertook a dramatic weight cut to face Usman on just six days notice
“We’ll see. If it’s Edwards, then it’s Edwards. If it’s Masvidal again, he seemed to be running with that excuse, he ran with that excuse! ‘Oh, I took the fight on six days notice. I wasn’t training.’
“I would love to see what he has different with a full camp because I truly believe it’ll be worse with a full camp. It was better for him just taking that fight ons ix days notice.
“With a full camp I think it’ll be way worse for him. So it could be him, you never know.”
