Jonathan Woodgate admits he made a key mistake during tough Middlesbrough tenure and hails Harry Redknapp’s influence – ‘I’d be stupid not to pick his brains’

Bournemouth’s caretake manager Jonathan Woodgate has admitted he made a mistake not adding more experience to his backroom staff during his ill-fated spell as Middlesbrough head coach.
The former Tottenham and England defender was shown the door by Boro in June 2020 with the club sitting 21st in the Championship having overseen just nine wins in total.

Reinvigorated and rejuvenated, Woodgate is currently in caretaker charge of the promotion-chasing Cherries – winning both of his games as interim boss thus far.
Woodgate refused to be drawn on whether he wants the job on a permanent basis when quizzed by ex-Spurs teammate and current talkSPORT pundit Jamie O’Hara, and said his only immediate focus was on the club’s next match at Nottingham Forest.
Instead, he heaped praise on his former Tottenham boss, Harry Redknapp, for the continued support he is giving him in the early stages of his coaching career.
“I’ve travelled all the way to Bournemouth six hours away to do a coaching role,” Woodgate told Thursday’s talkSPORT Breakfast.
“And now with the circumstances I find myself in interim charge. You’ve got to drop down a peg or two, but I’m enjoying the role here.
The Bournemouth interim boss has huge respect for Harry Redknapp
“He’s always there for me, the gaffer. He’s been brilliant to be fair.
“He comes in and watches training and gives his advice on what he thinks. He’s been there and done it, so I’d be stupid not to pick his brains.
“I should have added that experience to my backroom staff at Middlesbrough to make it grow, so with Harry on my doorstep it’s perfect to get into him.”
Bournemouth are five points clear of Woodgate’s former side Middlesbrough in the final play-off spot, but face a tough task to force themselves into automatic promotion contention – with a ten-point gap between them and Norwich currently.
