Joe Root salutes England cricket fan who has waited ten months for tour in Sri Lanka as captain hits double hundred in first Test

Joe Root completed a brilliant double hundred to put England in control of the first Test against Sri Lanka and saluted the lone fan who has waited ten months for this tour.
The captain ended day one on 66, day two on 168 and marched onwards to 228 on the third morning before he was last man down in the tourists’ 421 all out – selflessly sacrificing a big not out.

Rob Lewis has been waiting 10 months for the tour
DJ Randy Caddick, real name Rob Lewis, travelled to Sri Lanka in March last year in hope of watching England in action before the tour was cancelled.
Rather than travelling home, he stayed and patiently waited for the tourists to return.
He was the sole voice giving a rendition of Jerusalem before the players began the first Test and his presence was very much appreciated by the England team.
Earlier in the Test, Root said: “I am aware of DJ Randy Caddick. Hopefully we get a chance to catch up with him in the next couple of weeks to touch base – whether that’s a Zoom call or a phone call, it’d be nice to get in touch.

“It’s an amazing story and hopefully we can give him something to smile about to round off what must have been an incredible year for him.”
When Root passed his doubled hundred milestone he waved to the solitary England fan on the hill outside the stadium.
Sri Lanka made inroads to the 286 run deficit as they ended the day on 156 for two but still 130 behind.
