Joanne Calderwood says she was ‘mentally outside of my body’ for last UFC loss but the Scot is now ready to work her way back to title shot on Conor McGregor Fight Island card

The Scot is back in action this weekend on a massive Conor McGregor card on Fight Island to take on Jessica Eye at UFC 257 where she hopes a win can get her back into the title picture just as she was last summer.
Ultimately, ‘JoJo’ didn’t get to face Valentina Shevchenko when the champion withdrew through injury and she then lost to Jennifer Maia in the interim. That’s something Calderwood regrets, but she can get back on the right path this weekend.
Navigating all of this during a global pandemic is not easy, but the 34-year-old told talkSPORT on Fight Island she has got a good set-up going right now.
“I have it good. My fiancé is my coach so it’s a bonus. We fight every night anyway; who makes the dinner, who does the tidying up… it’s always me [laughs].
“It’s not really changed too much for me, I’ve always had access to the gym. I’ve not had access to the team at some point, but right now, I think I’m in a good spot [training in] Las Vegas. It’s not ‘open open’, but it’s good to train and it’s good having a fight because you need that in this sport. Can’t just hit pads.

Leon Edwards has been vocal about believing he doesn’t need to leave Birmingham to hone his skills, but Scotland is a very different scene and not one of the traditional hotbeds in the UK.
Has it been great for Calderwood to get out of her home country and grow?
“Not at the start! But now at Syndicate, I have it good. We have like, 12 girls in our team and I was searching for female training partners and I feel like it’s a big, big thing I was missing.
“I was always training with guys and I would stay in there but it wasn’t good for my confidence because I was always getting beaten up. I just couldn’t win with a guy and someone bigger than me.
“So yeah, I feel like I’m in a good place now. I didn’t have that in Scotland. I know some of the guys that are staying in the UK and they’re making it work and you can, but for me I had to get out of the cold, find the heat and female training partners.
Calderwood has five finishes in her career with 14 wins
“My gym back home is awesome and I think about them everyday. I really did want to make it work and I still want to when I can get back there. There’s no hard feelings, I wish I could have made it work. If I didn’t move from Scotland, I wouldn’t be in the great place I am now, so I’m glad I did leave.
Calderwood risked it all by taking a fight with Maia last August and was submitted in the first round.
While it’s been mentally tough since, Calderwood says she didn’t feel herself the whole day of the fight.
“It definitely was hard. But this sport brings lots of ups and downs and I feel like that and all the other s*** I’ve been through have made me stronger. It never gets easier. It’s a constant battle you’re working at every day.
“For my last loss, I just wasn’t feeling good the whole day. Mentally, I was outside of my body. I’ve been in that position a lot and I just feel like I wasn’t there. It wasn’t my ju-jitsu, it was just a bad day at the office.

“We’re training every day. You can turn up during the week and one or two bad days, but if you have one of those bad days one of the two times you’re fighting in the year, you make a mistake and you’re gong home with half your pay-check and a loss. It definitely is the hardest part of the sport – at least one of them.”
Calderwood can get back on the right track on Saturday by taking down gym rival Eye.
