Charlie Austin ‘felt like a kid again’ and delighted to have ‘purpose’ after marking second QPR debut with goal against Luton

Charlie Austin said he ‘felt like a kid again’ after the experienced striker scored on his QPR return in a vital 2-0 win over Luton.
Austin re-signed for the Championship strugglers on a loan deal until the end of the season from West Brom last weekend and was handed his first start by manager Mark Warburton at Kenilworth Road on Tuesday night.

Austin, 31, scored 48 goals in 89 games in his first spell in W12 from 2013 to 2016 and continued where he left off with a first-half header against the Hatters.
“I felt like a kid again,” Austin told Wednesday’s talkSPORT Breakfast. “I have missed that smile on my face every day and having a purpose.
“Footballers need a purpose at the end of the week, like any line of work; if you are going into work unhappy then you do not get the best out of yourself.
“I just feel like the last four days I have been back at the club it has brought that spark back.”
He continued: “When the opportunity arose, I wanted to come back; and I have to thank [West Brom technical director] Luke Dowling for making it possible.

“It just seemed to click [against Luton], my all-round game was on point. I know what happened before at the club, but its 2020/21 now and I need to adapt to the situation I’m in now.
“We just need to concentrate on ourselves and get out of the situation we’re in. It’s okay saying we’ve been unlucky but ultimately you need to win games of football.”
Austin led the line alongside Lyndon Dykes at Luton and believes they can strike up an exciting partnership.
He explained: “We trained together on Monday for ten minutes as obviously he played 120 minutes on Saturday [against Fulham in the FA Cup].
“It just clicked during the first half and it felt like we had trained together for weeks and when you have link up play with the forward next to you sometimes it’s just natural.”
