Carlos Condit came ‘pretty close’ to knocking out Georges St Pierre, beat Nick Diaz, lost five UFC fights in a row and now at risk of being cut

Carlos Condit is a UFC veteran and has fought some of the biggest names in the welterweight division but knows his fight this weekend could be his last.
He will make his 18th appearance in the promotion on Saturday at Fight Island when he finally takes on Matt Brown at the third time of asking.
Condit has an MMA record of 31-132020 Josh Hedges
The 36-year-old snapped a five-fight losing streak in October when he got the decision over Court McGee but is on the final fight of his contract.
If he loses he could be staring down a potential exit from the UFC – a promotion he’s been with since 2009.
Speaking to talkSPORT, he said: “I have a great relationship with Dana [White, the UFC president]. They’ve treated me really well and so I think it just comes down to if I’m performing or not. I’ve done what I’ve done in the sport.
When asked if his name could have value to younger fighters coming up, he added: “When I was up and coming I always wanted to fight the guys who had something I wanted. I was always looking to climb.
“Somebody fighting me and having wins over me, depending on where they are at in their career is a step or a notch on their belt.”
Younger fans of the sport might not remember just how good Condit was when he was at the top of his game.
He was arguably one of the most exciting fighters around – you don’t win five Fight of the Night bonuses, and two knockout prizes, for nothing.
You look at his record of just three wins over the last eight years and it’s seemingly underwhelming.

But there were long layoffs between some of those bouts, including a near two-year gap between 2018 and 2020 plus two title fights in there, both of which he lost.
Condit was welterweight champion in the WEC, defending his belt three times, before the promotion was bought out by the UFC and he moved over.
A title shot was not immediately forthcoming and the ‘Natural Born Killer’ really had to earn it.
His first fight ended in defeat but after that went on to win five straight to earn a highly anticipated match against Georges St Pierre.
In that run he scored two Knockout of the Night bonuses for his wins against Dan Hardy and Dong Hyun Kim plus a Fight of the Night against Rory MacDonald.

Condit then faced Nick Diaz for the interim UFC welterweight championship and got the decision win to go on to St Pierre.
It was a close fight with the Hall of Famer and Condit came agonisingly close to beating the UFC legend.
In the third round, he knocked him down for just the second time in his career but St Pierre managed to hold on.
It went the distance with the decision going to GSP but the champion recognised just how close Condit came to winning.
“The moment I’m most proud of my career is when I got dropped by the headkick by Carlos Condit,” GSP explained in a press conference back in 2019 when he retired.
“I fell down and I was able to stand up. It sounds weird, people think it will be the wins, but for me it was when I was dropped and got back up.
“It shows I had the guys to comeback from an obstacle and was able to overcome it.”

High praise indeed from someone who’s sparkling career was littered with highlights.
Condit himself thought he had that fight and if you look back at the footage it’s hard to disagree with him.
When asked how close he thought he was to finishing GSP, he told talkSPORT: “Pretty close. I thought I had a mount but he got out and pulled through.”
That defeat to GSP back in 2012 was the beginning of his slump in terms of results but there are some big names he fought – winning three more Fight of the Night bonuses along the way.
Johny Hendricks, Tyron Woodley, Robbie Lawler, and Demian Maia all beat him along the way.
His fight with Lawler was an absolute classic, and for the title, and many think that he should have come away with the win.
“The fight against Robbie Lawler was one that I lost and it still sucks,” he said when speaking about some of the highlights of his career. “There was that one. The GSP fight was awesome. There’s a lot of them.”
He went five whole years without tasting victory before beating McGee in October.
At Fight Island on Saturday he has the chance to start putting a streak together to maybe make one final flourish in his MMA career at the top level.

After all, Michael Bisping was 37 before he won his first UFC title when he shocked the world against Luke Rockhold.
He has been scheduled to fight Matt Brown two times before, in 2013 and 2018, but Brown has withdrawn due to injury both times.
If he loses, though, the stats will not look good for Condit. Three wins in 12 fights in the UFC isn’t looked on all that favourably no matter how much of a legend you are.
Brown is no easy opponent either as he’s a storied veteran of the UFC having come through the Ultimate Fighter series 7 back in 2008. Saturday will be his 27th fight in the promotion.
Condit admitted he had a lot riding on the fight not just because it could be his last.
He said: “Dude, I’m getting in there against a guy who is going to try and f*** me up, so there’s a lot riding on this on a lot of different levels. Like lots of levels.
“It would be different (not fighting in the UFC) but I haven’t thought that far ahead. I’m taking it one step at a time. I’ve got plenty to think about right now without all that.“
